Desert Academy Looking for Host Families

Desert Academy would like to open our doors to several Foreign Exchange students this school year, and we are looking for host families -- which means we cannot do this without you.

Adam (from Ghana) and Mahmoud (from Egypt) are recipients of the Kennedy Lugar Youth Exchange YES State Department Scholarship.

We also have the opportunity to host six students from six different countries through the Program of Academic Exchange.  All eight of these students are anxious to come to New Mexico to learn firsthand about the American way of life and share their culture with our students.

Local volunteers will support you and your hosted student throughout the year to help you both receive the most from your time together.  You provide a bed, transportation and meals for your student, but most importantly, you should be eager and excited to share your life and activities while providing the same kind of care, support, and comfort as you would your own child or family members.

Hosting an exchange student gives you the opportunity to be personally involved with building bridges of intercultural understanding.  It allows you to model the learner profile traits we are encouraging in Desert students of being caring, balanced and open-minded, while helping to share more global perspectives with all Desert students.  Hosting an exchange student is the gift you are able to both give and receive.

If you know you are interested or would like to learn more about hosting a foreign exchange student, please let us know by emailing

Thank you so much -

Adam Longfellow
