When you volunteer, everybody - the school, your children, and you - will benefit.
There’s nothing more powerful than when parents and the school work together for the good of the children. Serving as a parent volunteer is vital to enriching your child’s or grandchild’s education at Desert Academy. Parents who volunteer meet other parents who can often give deeper insights in the the culture of the school. Also, volunteering provides unique opportunities to get to know the administration, the staff, teachers, and students. You get to see the mission in action! Students whose families are involved typically receive higher grades and test scores, complete more homework, have better attendance, and possess more positive attitudes and behaviors.
At Desert Academy, we feel strongly about parent involvement and want your help supporting the academic, social, emotional and physical growth of your children.
Here are several ways you can get involved:
Host an international student
Desert Academy families have the unique opportunity to host an international student by offering a welcoming and safe way to immerse these young adults into the Santa Fe community. Being a host family is a great way to build bridges between countries and cultures, and provide your own children a new perspective on the world. Simply by sharing your home for a school year or just a semester, you give an exceptional young person from another country a lifetime opportunity. If you are interested in hosting an international student, please contact our Admissions Director at email@example.com
DA Parent Association
All parents or guardians are automatically members of the Parent Association (PA). The PA is a great way to get involved in your child’s school community, meet other parents and support Desert Academy’s faculty and staff. This group of dedicated parents helps to coordinate appreciation luncheons, hosts coffee mornings with the Head of School, assigns teacher grants and holds an annual Giving Tree to raise money for special request. The PA holds monthly meetings and will be on the school calendar, usually on the 2nd Monday of each month during the school year.
Contact George, our PA President, at firstname.lastname@example.org to volunteer for the Parent Association, or to become a grade level rep.
Grandparents Club also known as our Wise Wildcats!
Desert Academy understands the impact of the bond between a grandparent and grandchild. We are grateful to have a number of very involved grandparents in our community. We love to see our Wise Wildcats at sporting events, performances, art events and other school events. Our grandparents club meets on a regular basis to socialize and get updates on our school events. There are many ways to be an involved with the Wise Wildcats. Sign up for our Desert Times electronic newsletter, Oasis magazine or volunteer on one of our committees. The simplest way to support your grandchild is to donate to our annual fund.
Our events play an important part in building and maintaining our community. Several traditional events throughout the year help to support vital programs such as tuition assistance. Volunteers are greatly appreciated and needed to help facilitate these events. Tasks include securing donations, planning and running raffles, auction work, venue decorating, parent panels, campus tours, set up and break down of events and much more.

This committee helps to support our student athletes. The majority of Desert Academy students participate in at least one school sport and many participate in two or more. Other ways to volunteer
There are a number of ways to volunteer at the school: chaperoning school trips, tutoring students, taking photos at sports events and other school events, working in our school library, helping with student photo day, supporting the Senior IB art showcase, planning the middle school continuation celebration and high school graduation.
Contact Barbara Doddek, email@example.com to volunteer and discuss ways you can help at Desert Academy.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Every fall, at the end of the first quarter, parents have the opportunity to meet each of their students’ teachers and to hear in person about their progress in each subject. This is followed in the late winter by Student Led Conferences, during which students actually drive the conversation with the support of their advisors. Weekly progress and assignments are reported on our online reporting system, ManageBac, but these two types of conferences serve to provide the personal contact between faculty and families. Parents receive notice via eNews of the times when conference sign-ups are available on our website.
If you have questions regarding this, please don’t hesitate to contact our front desk by calling 505-992-8284 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
